A LITTLE REASSURANCE
Questions dog owners often ask us
01How often should my dog be groomed?
For many professionally styled breeds, appointments every four to eight weeks work well, but longer coats often need more frequent professional maintenance. The exact schedule depends on breed, coat type, chosen length, coat condition, lifestyle and the amount of home care. For some longer styles, we may recommend weekly or fortnightly bath and maintenance appointments to help keep the coat comfortable and manageable.
02Which brushes should I use at home?
The right tools depend on your dog's coat. Ask us at your appointment and we can show you what we recommend for your individual dog and how to check you are brushing through the entire coat.
03When can my puppy start coming to the groomers?
Do not wait until your puppy is 12 months old or desperately needs their first major haircut. Positive grooming experiences should begin while they are young.
04How long does a groom take?
A typical full groom takes around two hours. Bath and tidy appointments usually take around an hour and a half. Larger dogs, extensive scissoring, hand stripping or appointments requiring additional support may take around three hours or sometimes longer.
05What if my dog does not like being groomed?
Tell us. You will not be judged. We have considerable experience with dogs who are nervous, anxious or uncomfortable with aspects of grooming.
06Can I change or cancel my appointment?
Yes, but please give us as much notice as possible. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice may be charged 50 per cent of the appointment fee. Where less than 24 hours' notice is given, the full appointment fee may be payable.
07Do short haired dogs need grooming?
Yes. Short coats shed, skin still needs care and nails, ears and general coat condition still require attention.
08Does my dog need grooming in winter?
Yes. Coat maintenance remains important in colder months. The grooming schedule or chosen style can be adjusted for the season without abandoning regular coat care.
09Does shaving a dog automatically make them cooler?
No. Different coat types behave differently, and shaving is not automatically the best answer to warm weather.
10What happens if my dog is matted?
We will assess the coat and discuss realistic options. Our first responsibility is your dog's welfare. Where knots can be safely brushed out and your dog is comfortable and cooperative, we may be able to work through them, although additional time may mean an additional charge. This is usually something we would consider as a one off when circumstances have affected the coat, rather than as a regular alternative to coat maintenance. Where brushing out would cause too much discomfort, a shorter reset may be the kinder option.
11Why do you recommend staying with one groomer?
Consistency can make a significant difference. A groomer who sees your dog regularly learns what is normal for them and how their coat, skin, behaviour and mobility change over time.
