PUPPY GROOMING IN NEATH
Puppy grooming that starts early
The best time to build a positive grooming routine is before your puppy desperately needs a haircut.
Early visits allow puppies to become familiar with the salon, equipment, sounds, handling and sensations involved in professional grooming. We encourage owners to practise gentle handling of feet, ears, faces and bodies at home too.
A much better approach is to introduce grooming early and gradually.

Your puppy does not need a haircut
A first grooming visit is about education as much as appearance.
Young puppies can start learning that grooming is a normal part of life before their adult coat develops. Short, appropriate introductions help them become familiar with handling, salon sounds and equipment without the pressure of needing a complete transformation.
Your groomer can advise on the right timing for your puppy based on breed, coat, vaccination status and individual circumstances.

Why early grooming matters
Dogs do not automatically understand why someone is holding a paw, lifting an ear or asking them to stand still while equipment moves around them.
Those are learned skills.
Starting early gives your puppy the opportunity to build familiarity gradually. That can make future full grooms easier for the dog, owner and groomer.
For breeds such as Cockapoos, Cavapoos, Poodles, Bichons, Shih Tzus and other dogs with coats requiring lifelong professional maintenance, those early habits are particularly valuable.

What can you practise at home?
Gently get your puppy used to having their feet, legs, ears, face and body handled.
Introduce brushing in short, calm sessions rather than waiting until knots have formed. Reward calm behaviour and stop before your puppy becomes frustrated.
The objective is not to pin your puppy down until they tolerate it. We want handling and grooming to become familiar and predictable.

Consistency matters after the first visit
A puppy introduction is the beginning, not the end.
Regular appointments allow your dog to become familiar with the same environment and grooming team. They also allow the coat to be maintained before knots and matting make the process more uncomfortable.
At BARKERS in Neath, we encourage owners to see their groomer as part of the team supporting their dog throughout life.

Worried your puppy might not behave?
Please do not be embarrassed.
Puppies wiggle, investigate, become distracted and sometimes find new experiences overwhelming. They are learning.
Our job is to help them learn, not expect perfection on day one.
